April 25. 2007 1:20PM
Harrisburg’s annual citywide clean-up day will held Saturday, May 5, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. for residents within the city limits. Dumpsters will be located by the city compost site at the end of S. Prairie Street, and volunteers will help load materials.
The following items will not be accepted: toxic waste containers; paint containers; recyclables; tires; electronics; appliances; and hazardous water materials. Branches, leaves and grass clippings will be accepted.
The Harrisburg Community Fire Department will hold an open house and youth fire safety program from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in conjunction with the clean-up day.
The City of Tea will hold a free citywide pick-up June 4 beginning at 8 a.m. This service will be a prime opportunity for residents to help beautify Tea before Teapot Days begins on June 12.
Furniture, appliances, tires, wood, concrete and any other large items may be set on front curbs to be hauled. Branches should be separate, and everyday trash should continue to go to garbage services. No yard waste will be accepted.
Electronics and hazardous household wastes will also not be hauled. Instead, the City encourages residents to take advantage of two free drop-off services in Sioux Falls for those items.
A free drop-off for electronics will be held this Saturday, April 28, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at Millennium Recycling Inc. (305 East 50th Street North, Sioux Falls). Large items such as desktop and laptop computers, monitors, and printers will be accepted, as well as hand-held electronic devices like cell phones and pagers.
The City encourages residents to take hazardous household materials to a year-round, free drop-off site at 1510 E. Chambers Street, Sioux Falls. The facility is open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. on Wednesdays through Fridays and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays (W. of N. Cliff Avenue by the big hill and E. of the spillway by North Drive). It accepts home and garden pesticides, chlorinated solvents, pool chemicals, aerosol cans, oil-based or latex paint, wood preservatives, used motor oil and oil filters, and mercury.
For more information on either of these free services, call the Recycling Coordinator for the City of Sioux Falls at 367-4946 or visit www.siouxfalls.org.
